ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How does literature reflect the lives of the common people?
We read together and discussed some of the Early Scottish and English Ballads. I highlighted form - four-line stanzas, metrical pattern (iambic tetrametre, trimetre) mimics musical time, alternating rhyme; and we discussed how the content of ballads are mostly life of common people.
We also read together and discussed the growth of the English Language through the middle ages. I suggested that it would be important to note the change in pronunciations because the next period of literature that follows was about careful control of the sounds in language.
